Sunset and evening star and one clear call for me; May there be no moaning of the bar when I put out to sea!”  On June 1, 2024, Morley Silverthorn Smith, 91, was led by Tennyson’s poem Crossing the Bar as he traveled across to the meadow where his loving wife Marjorie Baird Smith, 83 had been waiting with their dogs since October 16, 2022.  Their journey together moved to the heavens as they made their final adventure over the rainbow bridge.
Marje and Morley, affectionately known as M&M melded their passions together and lived an adventurous life with travels across the world, raising and training canine companions, designing and crafting wooden boats, volunteering and supporting many organizations all while building deep relationships with their grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, family, and members of All Souls congregation.
Harold and Elmira nee Silverthorn Smith welcomed Morley into the world at home in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on November 3, 1932. Instead of following his father into the pharmacy, Morley, clever, smart, and determined, excelled (after a year of having fun) at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario to become a mechanical engineer.  Morley moved to the US and began his career in Indianapolis, Indiana leading him to meet Marje.
Ken and Louise nee Porter Baird welcomed a smart, headstrong leader, Marje, on October 27, 1938, in Larned, Kansas.  Marje forged a path empowering women of the future through her commitment to higher education for all.  Marje completed a finance degree in Texas in the late 50’s leading her to work for the Girl Scouts of America in Indianapolis, Indiana Leading her to meet Morley.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 25 Church Street, Bellville, OH 44813 on August 21, 2024, at 6 PM. Please bring a memory to share. In lieu of flowers, we request donations be sent to All Souls UU Church or Canine Companions 7480 New Albany-Condit Rd, New Albany, OH 43054 in memory of Marje & Morley Smith.
Tennyson’s words remind us “May there be no sadness of farewell.”  Instead, we shall be joyous as M&M embarks on their final adventure together.  They leave a legacy of adventure, service, and faith for those lucky enough to experience love from Marje and Morley Smith.  “For a love so free will never fly away……”
