Latonya Palmer “Lift Every Voice”

Speaker: Latonya Palmer “Lift Every Voice”
Topic: Black History is Everyone’s History
Bio: Latonya Palmer is a native of Mansfield, Ohio. A single mother of three adult sons and she has 6 beautiful grandchildren. She has attended North Central State College and Akron’s University Wayne College as a Social Work major; there, she was a two-year scholarship recipient. Currently she is an undergraduate social work student at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, in her senior year. She works part time with the homeless population, and in her spare time she enjoys mentoring young women who are rebuilding their lives
Latonya has been Chair of Mansfield Branch NAACP Voter Registration for a year and a half and she enjoys educating others concerning the many challenges Blacks are still encountering with/ their vote, learning about the tactics of voter suppression, expanding the turnout among infrequent voters, registering voters, organizing public forums and “Meet The Candidates Night”.
She will purser a career in Community Development, and her focus is improving relationships among unrepresented groups and city council. Latonya’s passion is helping individuals who are oppressed by a fault of their own or by society’s standards. Additional plans include stretching the city beyond its capacity and extending boundaries, while eliminating social barriers. Her strong belief is that strong community building must include all.
Civic engagement is no stranger to her. Growing up she witnessed her mother Betty Palmer-Harris making a difference in the community, who she says is her idol. Latonya lives by the NAACP Mission Statement: To secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons.
The Library is her favorite place to be, and jigsaw puzzles are her favorite hobby.
